High BP in children and teenagers: what parents should watch
Written by Dr. Vishnu Anjan Nareddy, MD (General Medicine)Professor of Medicine-Senior consultant physician (MD, General Medicine) · 4 min readHigh blood pressure is no longer just an adult disease; increasing numbers of adolescents and teenagers in urban India are diagnosed with elevated blood pressure. Early screening catches underlying kidney or hormonal causes and prevents early cardiovascular strain.

Why is high BP appearing in young people?
Sedentary lifestyles, hours of screen time, obesity, high-sodium packaged snacks (chips, noodles, fast food), and academic stress are major contributors. In children under 10, secondary kidney diseases are the most common cause.
How is BP measured accurately in children?
Using an adult-sized blood pressure cuff on a child's arm gives falsely elevated readings. Paediatric measurement requires an age-appropriate cuff size and reference to pediatric height-percentile charts.
Action plan: lifestyle before tablets
- Limit processed, packaged foods, chips, and sodas containing hidden sodium.
- Encourage at least 60 minutes of active outdoor sport or running daily.
- Set a strict screen-time limit of under 2 hours daily outside schoolwork.
- Prioritize 8 to 9 hours of uninterrupted sleep every night.
