Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS) successfully treat over 90% of diarrhea cases at home. However, when a child vomits continuously, refuses to drink, or displays sunken eyes and dry diapers, an intravenous (IV) drip in our day-care unit rapidly restores vital hydration and electrolytes within hours.

Why ORS is your first and best medicine

WHO-formulated ORS contains the precise ratio of glucose and sodium that forces the inflamed gut lining to absorb water. It is far more effective than glucose water, fruit juice, or plain water.

The 4 criteria for an IV drip

  • Persistent vomiting: child vomits every single teaspoon of liquid offered over 3–4 hours.
  • Severe dehydration: dry cracked lips, no tears when crying, sunken eyes, and cold hands.
  • Oliguria: no urine passed for over 6 hours in an infant or 8 hours in an older child.
  • Extreme lethargy: child is unusually drowsy, floppy, or difficult to awaken.

What happens in day care?

In our child-friendly day-care unit, a tiny cannula is placed gently. Intravenous balanced electrolyte fluids are administered over 2 to 4 hours under pulse oximeter monitoring. Most children regain their energy and go home the same afternoon.
