In children with dengue, the most critical window is the 24 to 48 hours when the fever starts dropping (days 3 to 7). If your child develops severe stomach pain, persistent vomiting, bleeding gums, or extreme restlessness, seek medical care immediately.

The paradox: fever drops, danger rises
Unlike other illnesses where dropping fever means recovery, in dengue, the 'critical phase' begins right as the body temperature falls. Blood vessels can leak plasma, causing platelet drops and internal fluid shifts.
The 6 red flag warning signs
- Severe, continuous pain in the abdomen
- Persistent vomiting (unable to retain any liquid for over 6 hours)
- Bleeding from gums, nose, or tiny red pinpricks on skin (petechiae)
- Extreme drowsiness, weakness, or unusual irritability
- Cold, clammy hands and feet with fast, weak pulse
- Passing very little or no urine for 6 hours or more
If any of these signs appear, do not wait for the morning clinic. Go to an emergency center immediately.
How to hydrate correctly at home
Offer small sips of ORS, tender coconut water, kanji, and milk frequently. Avoid giving plain water exclusively, as it dilutes essential electrolytes.
Medicines you must NEVER give
Never give ibuprofen, mefenamic acid (Meftal-P), or aspirin to a child with suspected dengue. These drugs irritate the stomach lining and significantly increase bleeding risks. Use only prescribed paracetamol.
Same-visit dengue NS1 and platelet counts with Paediatrician Dr. Bramhini Nareddy. Open until 10 pm.
